Baumé Hydrometers for Laboratory Use

Baumé hydrometers are measuring instruments used to determine the relative density of liquids using the Baumé scale, widely employed in laboratories, the chemical and food industries, and quality control.

They allow quick measurement of the concentration of solutions such as acids, salts, syrups, or chemical products without the need for electronic equipment, making them a reliable tool for routine measurements.

How a Baumé hydrometer works

A hydrometer operates according to Archimedes’ principle.

When the instrument is placed in a liquid, the depth to which it floats depends on the density of the sample.

The Baumé scale provides a direct reading of relative density, facilitating concentration control in industrial and laboratory processes.

To obtain accurate results, the measurement must be performed at the instrument’s calibration temperature.

Types of Baumé hydrometers available

In this category, you will find Baumé hydrometers calibrated at 15 °C, manufactured in accordance with UNE 400236, UNE 400311-1-2, ISO 387, and ISO 649-1 standards, and supplied with a batch certificate to ensure measurement accuracy.

They can also be manufactured calibrated at 20 °C and supplied with a calibration certificate upon request.

Available models come in different graduation ranges to suit various densities, for example:

  • 0–10 °Bé
  • 10–20 °Bé
  • 20–30 °Bé
  • 30–40 °Bé
  • 40–50 °Bé
  • 50–60 °Bé
  • 60–70 °Bé
  • Combined ranges: 0–20, 20–40, 40–60, 0–15, 15–30, 30–45, and 45–60 °Bé

They are available with divisions of 0.1 or 0.2 units, allowing you to choose between higher precision or a wider range depending on the application.

Recommendations for use

To obtain reliable measurements, it is recommended to:

  • Use appropriate cylinders that allow free flotation
  • Avoid air bubbles adhering to the instrument
  • Measure at the calibration temperature
  • Keep the glass clean and free of residues

Using specific ranges improves accuracy in laboratory work, quality control, and the chemical industry.
