Burettes
Burettes are essential instruments in any chemical laboratory, allowing precise measurement and dispensing of precise volumes of liquids. These tools are essential to ensure accuracy in experiments and processes where volumetric precision is crucial. They are equipped with a stopcock to control the release of the liquid and a graduated scale that facilitates precise measurement of the volume dispensed. With a burette, procedures such as titrations can be carried out with exceptional accuracy, ensuring reliable and reproducible results in the laboratory.
What are burettes used for? Uses of burettes in the laboratory
- Titrations: used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution by controlled addition of a titrant until the equivalence point is reached.
- Solution preparation: allow the precise preparation of solutions of specific concentrations, essential for experiments and analysis.
- Research and development: used in the creation of new products or in the improvement of existing ones, ensuring accuracy in formulation.
- Quality control: they verify that solutions meet the required specifications, ensuring consistency and reliability in industrial and laboratory processes.
- Calibrations: used in the calibration of other volumetric measuring instruments, ensuring accuracy at all stages of the analytical process.
What material are Pobel burettes made of?
Pobel burettes are mainly made of borosilicate glass 3.3, known for its high chemical and thermal resistance. This material is ideal for laboratory applications due to its durability and corrosion resistance. Some versions of the burettes are available in amber glass to protect light-sensitive solutions, maintaining their stability and accuracy during experiments.
How are burettes used?
Burettes are used for titration and are calibrated for "pouring". First rinse the burette very well with the standard solution, then fill the burette a little higher than the zero mark. Also fill the tip of the burette with the standard solution. Make sure there are no bubbles inside the burette. Fill with more standard solution to a maximum of 10 mm above the zero mark and be careful not to wet the wall of the burette above the liquid level. Reading the meniscus at the level of your height, empty the solution to the exact zero point. At this point you have to remove the drops at the tip of the burette. Then you have to open the stopcock very slowly and start the titration and also avoid that the tip of the burette touches the wall of the beaker you are using. When the colour changes, close the burette stopcock and wait 30 seconds in the time-delayed burettes. You have to read the discharged volume at the level of your eye. Don't forget to remove the drop left on the tip as it is also part of the titrated volume.
